"Automated Presort is a mail commingling operation handling nearly 1 billion pieces of Standard Class and First-Class letter mail annually. As Full-Service, IMb, and eDoc have become the wave of the future, Mail.dat files have become the means to submit mailings to the USPS. Sometimes the need arises to re-create a Mail.dat because of changes that need to be made. Examples would be a permit change because a customer may have forgotten to add postage to their CAPS account or maybe they communicated the wrong permit number to us. In a commingler’s environment, there are many variables in the Mail.dat that make it quite different from a lettershop’s version. There could be many panels, customers, postage rates, postage statements, and postage types.
